This summer, we’re excited to host our Jane Street Immersion Program (JSIP) in New York City! JSIP is a multi-week software engineering program that represents a unique curriculum for Jane Street — we don’t often host students this early in their academic careers, and this program is more rigorous than most (it’s called an “immersion program” for good reason)!
During the first few weeks of the program, in a classroom just off our bustling trading floor, you’ll learn from full-time Jane Street software engineers and dive deep into computer science fundamentals. You’ll also learn OCaml, Jane Street’s favored programming language, along with the ins and outs of the functional programming that is so crucial to our business.
During the remainder of the program, you’ll take the concepts you learned in the first few weeks and apply them to larger, structured projects. From putting together a design doc, to writing robust and maintainable code, you’ll get the chance to plan and execute a complex SWE project. You’ll also learn best practices when it comes to applying and interviewing for future SWE internships, and gain an in-depth understanding of what a career in software engineering could look like.
To apply to JSIP, you must meet the following requirements:
-
Current first-year undergraduate student (matriculated into university in 2024)
-
Intending to complete your college or university's introduction to computer science course(s) by June 2025
-
Experienced barriers to access and opportunity within the computer science field*
-
Authorized to be employed in the U.S. without a visa sponsorship, whether it is employer sponsorship or sponsorship through a school or university.

*Our definition of such barriers is broad; they could be related to personal circumstances or financial hardship. We acknowledge the breadth of challenges that could lead a high-achieving student to be under resourced or under exposed to advanced programming opportunities. Examples include, but are not limited to: being a first-generation college student, identifying with an underrepresented ethnic/racial minority group, being Pell Grant eligible, having notable need for financial assistance, attending an under-resourced or rural school, coming from a marginalized community, or experiencing personal hardship. This list is not exhaustive, and we encourage any student who is interested and believes they fit the criteria for the program to apply.
Diversity of thought and contribution is what allows our firm to stay bold and nimble. Many of us had no previous experience with finance or OCaml when we arrived, and JSIP requires no such experience — only a penchant for programming and a curious mind.
Applicants may be required to submit their high school and college transcripts (official or unofficial copies will suffice) as part of the application process. Jane Street will cover all housing, program fees, and transportation for selected JSIP Fellows.
