GET TO KNOW US | JANE STREET
Hey, my name is Jess. I work on the Hospitality team, which is a sub-team of Office Admin. I started at Jane Street in 2019 and I work in the New York office.
WHAT IS YOUR DAY-TO-DAY LIKE?
The hospitality team at Jane Street helps support the office in a variety of ways. Some days, I could be helping support the reception desk and answering phone calls, responding to emails, or booking conference rooms. Other days, that could be helping with another team to plan and book events. I could, depending on the time of year, be helping out with the internship or new hires getting a tour throughout the space.
WHAT BACKGROUNDS DO PEOPLE ON THE HOSPITALITY TEAM COME FROM?
There are a variety of backgrounds on the Hospitality team at Jane Street. Hospitality experience is definitely not required, though it is nice to see it on a resume. I think something that’s really important to us is just the attitude and being able to jump in and help out, and the skills can be taught along the way.
WHAT SKILLS ARE IMPORTANT TO HAVE ON THE HOSPITALITY TEAM?
There are a lot of skills on the Hospitality team that are really applicable and really useful. Staying curious and being able to pick people’s brains on things and ask people about a project that they’re working on that they mentioned in passing is incredibly valuable. I think another skill that’s really important is to be able to think outside the box and see problems or things that might not be working as efficiently for other people and to be able to think of solutions for those problems. The other skill that’s really useful at Jane Street is just being able to be a team player. Everyone comes in with their specific job description, but I think being able to go outside of that and to work with other teams is incredibly important at the firm.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT WORKING AT JANE STREET?
There are so many things to love about Jane Street. I think one of my absolute favorites is just the people here at Jane Street. Being able to work alongside so many brilliant and incredible colleagues that are just also so nice, I think is just a joy. One of the beauties of working on the Hospitality team is getting to work with so many different people across so many different departments. Even just yesterday, I was working with the Market Data team on a calendar project, and I’ve never worked with the Market Data team before. It was really cool to be able to understand a little bit more about what they do and to be able to work alongside them on a project.
WHAT MAKES JANE STREET A UNIQUE PLACE TO WORK?
I think something super unique about working at Jane Street is having a flat hierarchy. I think it really removes and strips away some of those barriers to feel like you’re not allowed to talk to someone who’s been here for 15 years. I think being able to have that openness without the hierarchy allows for you to be able to get to know people that much better and be able to explore different interests that you might not have even known existed before.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE SOMEONE JOINING YOUR TEAM?
The advice that I would give to someone joining the team is just to be really inquisitive. It’ll get you so far on the team as well as at Jane Street — to be able to ask questions and be interested, and to be able to help out wherever there’s a need.
