From code to woodcraft
A striking sculpture on the recently opened 18th floor in our New York office was created by one of our own software developers. The sculpture consists of eighteen wooden cubes of increasing size. The smallest measures three inches across, the largest more than four feet. Each cube is made using 24 individual wooden pieces, for 432 pieces total.
The cube was entirely handmade from rough-sawn white-oak, and the corners were all constructed using mitered half-lap joinery. Each edge was joined only with glue; no screws or other fasteners involved. The total piece weighs almost 700 pounds and, resting on its corner, stands just under eight feet tall.
The sculptor, John, works on the AI Assistants team in New York. There, his team builds a series of custom models and tools for helping people use LLMs. At home, in his shop, he pours the same patience and precision that writing code requires into handcrafted wood projects for friends and family.
